The Miracles We Witness Daily

A Miracle in our Times

Life deals us
many cards. We don't always like the cards we were dealt but are free
to choose the light in which we view these cards. In this vein I offer
an extraordinary story that occurred several years ago to a
sixty-year-old woman, a friend of a friend.

At the age of
twenty Bracha (alias) began to lose her vision and by the time she was
forty she was completely blind. A little while back a twelve-year old
girl overheard Bracha mention that a certain surgical procedure would
restore her eyesight but the cost of the procedure was prohibitive.
Buoyed by the simplicity and naivety of youth this young lady took up a
collection. When she reached a grand total of
one-hundred-and-fifty-seven dollars she brought the money to Bracha
assuring her, with a confident smile, that she could now afford the
surgery.

Touched by the
pure love Bracha set out to the doctor’s office with her bundle of
crumpled dollars. The doctor, moved by the child’s sincerity, agreed to
perform the surgery and waived his fee. Several days after he surgery
Bracha picked up the phone to call her best friend. Tears filled her
eyes as she excitingly exclaimed, “I can see the snow fall for the
first time in twenty years”.

Reflection

How many times
have we observed our daily routines and regarded them with derision and
even dread? Do you remember exactly when you stopped seeing G-d's magic
in the astonishing details of life? Our general paths are laid out by
G-d but it is up to us to notice the miracle in the many details we
encounter. Incessant and daily repetition chip away at this thrill, yet
deep inside we know that the beauty remains today as wondrous as it
ever was.
